Abstract Art Photography Chicago

Just sharing some of my latest fine art photography captures.  These were shot in Chicago over the past few days.  Both have gotten interesting reaction from the crowd over at Flickr.  What say you?

This is an abstract photograph of an office building in downtown Chicago.  My guy works here.  I went there with him on Sunday to deliver about of zillion boxes of Girl Scout Cookies, which he'd sold to his co-workers for his daughter.  I barely lifted a finger to help get the cookies up stairs.  I took photos instead.  ;-)

I was captivated by the door to this apartment building in the Wicker Park neighborhood, right on arty Milwaukee Avenue.  This area is Chicago's answer to New York's Greenwich Village.  Maybe not quite as out-there, but certainly exotic enough.

Actually, this was shot in Hammond, Indiana, just across the border from the Chicago South side.  It's the roof of a liquor store!

Urban Exploration and Urban Fragments at Flickr

I joined two Flickr photography groups that I'm really enjoying.

Urban Fragments (No People) specially focuses members on shots with an arty composition, where the subjects are often framed in ways that it's tough to discern it in its usual, broader context.  As you can tell from the group name, you'll find no humanoid portraits here.  It's primarily photographs of landscape, architecture or buildings with little to no digital treatment, but creatively presented nonetheless.

Urban Exploration (Urb Ex) is about the exploration of abandoned structures or infiltrating active sites.    Lots of wonderfully grungy architecture here, if you like that sort of thing.  It intrigues me, snooping around in dangerous, old buildings.  You'd be surprised by what you find.

These captures are scenes from St. Louis, off Broadway and Hall Streets.  The first is a chain link fence against the blue sky.  The second is a stairway from an abandoned building, not far from the Procter and Gamble factory.

These and other images I feature on my Flickr board can be purchased as premium, archival quality prints, posters and notecards at Urban Islands - Fine Art Photography.

Best,

Viqi

Black History Month ACEO Art Card - "Wade In the Water"

I love ACEO art cards and made this one as part of a Black History Month salute.  It's titled "Wade In the Water."  It's based on an image of a daring young girl I saw pushing through Lake Michigan last summer, alone.  I gave the photograph some digital layering and other tricks, eventually settling on this multi-image, colorized design.

Artists of every discipline create these miniature art cards of their painting, illustrations, photography and other art.  They're like sports trading cards, but feature fine art collectibles.  The only rule is that your card must measure 3.5 x 2.5 inches (or vice versa).

If you're an art card collector, here's where you can learn more about this limited edition art card at Etsy:

Slipped Away

  "Growing Wild"
This is dedicated to my favorite uncle, who recently left this world after an 85-year, colorful life.  He's made such a huge mark on our family.  Not a perfect man, but charasmatic.  A tall, affable figure in his circle, someone whose gruff edge no longer fooled anyone.

"Love" was even his last name.
